Only Koshered/Treibered Meat Permitted for Sale

July 13th, 2010

July 13, 2010
chief-rabbinate-of-israel1In a move that is painfully overdue, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel has released a ruling bringing to an end of the sale of meats that were slaughtered in accordance to halacha, but not treibered (de-veined) or perhaps not soaked, salted and soaked. In either case, such meat may not be eaten ‘as is’.

In too many cases, persons unfamiliar with this reality did not understand labeling or even look to understand and G-d forbid cooked and ingested forbidden meats. Alternatively, some people who understand the status are ignorant to the proper halachic procedures to render the meat edible. Read the rest of this entry »

basher-signFor those of you who have accompanied my on a shuk walking tour, you are familiar with a number of the stores that I make a point of mentioning, usually those with unauthorized hechsherim, or without any hechsher at all. The popular Basher Cheese Store is an example of the latter, and too many shoppers feel that seeing someone behind the counter sporting a kippa is the same as a kosher supervision. I have decided to share the latest Basher story with you, readers, hoping to drive the point home. Read the rest of this entry »

shearisSHEIRIS YISRAEL (FISH)
Sheiris Yisrael reports all fish sold with its hechsher are free of concerns regarding worms even if the packaging does not specifically state this.

The same is true for the Eida Chareidit (as reported earlier) and Jerusalem Rabbinate regarding fish sold in Machane Yehuda, including live carp, which the rabbinate reports are inspected prior to being permitted for sale (as was reported earlier as well).

Candy Stores are a Trap

July 8th, 2010

July 8, 2010

candy-gum-dropsHEFKER CONTINUES IN THE FRUM AREAS TOO: There is Baruch Hashem a large selection of kosher candies on the market today, more than we have ever known in the past, some mehadrin while others ‘regular kosher’ for the lack of a better term.

A problem regarding candy stores in Israel, particularly in religious neighborhoods, is that consumers make the bold and unfounded assumption that everything displayed is certified kosher, and some even believe if the store is in a neighborhood like Geula (Yerushalayim), it must be mehadrin. WRONG! Read the rest of this entry »

Peninat Ha’ir - Another Jerusalem Catering Horror Tale

July 7th, 2010

July 7, 2010
catering-photoFor those of you who have heard me speak of late, you are aware that I am now focusing on the caterers, an industry that seems to be operating with impunity regarding kashrut, simply hosting affairs in the religious community that lack a hechsher. Below is another story, with some of the identifying facts pertaining to the real victims changed to avoid disclosing the anguish they endured as they prepared for a recent family simcha.

I stress that the blame rests with us above all others, since our failure to demand transparency, a simple kosher certificate, clears the way for the unscrupulous individuals to dupe us. Read the rest of this entry »

chief-rabbinate-of-israel11. Treif Alert!
An alert mashgiach prevented the sale of lamb fat suspected of being treif to a meat processing factory. Fraudulent shipping manifests and documents accompanied the non-kosher lamb fat, but the mashgiach’s keen eye detected what was taking place. The paperwork stated the item was under the kosher supervision of the Tel Aviv – Jaffa Rabbinate, with the perpetrators using a stolen book of shipping manifests, taken from the Carmel Shuk. KASHRUT ALERT - Morano Nuts

morano-shuk-agrippas-st-store-signs21The branch of this national name located at the corner of Agrippas and Machane Yehuda Streets in the shuk, Jerusalem, has lost its hechsher from Badatz Belz Machzikei Hadas. I was told by the kashrus area supervisor for Belz that the hechsher organization revoked the hechsher because the store, which sells over 50% candies which are not under the supervision of Belz or Beit Yosef, wishes to sell even more kosher problematic items, prompting the decision to yank the Belz certificate.
