5th & final Machane Yehuda kashrus tour of the summer of 5769

5th & final Machane Yehuda kashrus tour of the summer of 5769

Another Machane Yehuda Shuk walking tour is planned, this time for Monday, August 23, 2010 (13 Elul), beginning at 5:30pm. Advanced registration is required.

I respectfully request that you DO NOT register unless you are coming, and not to just hold the slot and then the last-minute cancelation. In such a case I feel that a cancelation less than three days ahead of the tour compels you to make arrangements to pay since the slots are lost. Too many people signed up and canceled in previous tours.

I also recommend that one does not bring a baby carriage or small children. Conditions are not optimal for such. I do recommend bringing a camera if you wish. (more…)

The Continuing Saga of Morano at the Shuk

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

August 8, 2010

morano-shuk-agrippas-st-store-signs22Once again, the kashrus status of the Morano branch located at the corner of Agrippas and Machane Yehuda Streets in Jerusalem has changed. This time, Badatz Beit Yosef and Badatz Belz Machzikei Hadas have returned their certification to the store, which also has a kosher certificate from the Jerusalem Rabbinate.

In all cases, the three agencies mentioned above, only certify the seeds, dried fruits and nut products, NOT the large array of candies sold at the branch. The store lost is certification recently from the Badatz agencies due to the “many problematic candies” sold, but it appears that has been rectified.

In short, the situation is back to what it was before the kashrut certifications were revoked and one opting to buy sweets at this store must inspect each item to ascertain the level of kashrus since the candies include many hechsherim. Some items that I checked had hechsherim from sources that I for one am unfamiliar with.

July 27, 2010
machane-yehuda5Well, it’s now 20:45 and we completed another Machane Yehuda shuk walking tour less than an hour ago. Baruch Hashem, the information was well-received and I believe that slowly, the word is getting out. Participants are learning the ins-and-outs of shopping in Yerushalayim and how to become wise kosher consumers.

I apologize, but by the time I remembered the traditional photo it was dark and most participants, numbering about 20, had left. You will have to take my word on this one. The tour lasted well over two hours — an eager group with many questions. I hope participants headed home with a feeling the time was well spent.

Stay tuned to the website, Facebook and email for announcements of the next tour. Sorry, nothing on the planning board for the immediate future.

basher-signFor those of you who have accompanied my on a shuk walking tour, you are familiar with a number of the stores that I make a point of mentioning, usually those with unauthorized hechsherim, or without any hechsher at all. The popular Basher Cheese Store is an example of the latter, and too many shoppers feel that seeing someone behind the counter sporting a kippa is the same as a kosher supervision. I have decided to share the latest Basher story with you, readers, hoping to drive the point home. (more…)

June 8, 2010

shuk-tour-june-8-2010-2Admittedly, this year has been accompanied by many last-minute cancelations but I remain committed and the shuk tours are underway for the 5770 summer season.

Participants today, as in the past, were somewhat surprised by what they saw, realizing it is all there in front of our eyes but for some reason, we simply don’t see what we would prefer not seeing/knowing.

Another Shuk Walking Tour

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

shuk-tour-22010(12 Sivan 5770 - May 25, 2010) We just completed another Shuk walking tour of Machane Yehuda, and Baruch Hashem, the information was received with enthusiasm. I hope to have another tour in June, an evening one like today’s, which I will announce blei neder to this forum, Facebook and the email list.

My sincerest apologies to the group for the extremely poor photo. By the way, only some of the participants wished to be included in the photo. The group was larger.  I guess I was too anxious to begin the tour and failed to check the photo. (more…)

First ‘Shuk’ Tour of 2010

Monday, May 24th, 2010

11 Sivan 5770
May 24, 2010

shuk-tour-may-24-20101The first shuk walking tour got underway today, Monday, and strangely, we opened the season with many cancelations due to one legitimate reason or another. The opening tour was accompanied with yet another first, participants arrived with baby carriages [babysitter cancelations].

The group was quantitatively small, but all agreed qualitatively the time was well spent and parents [and perhaps children] benefited from their new insight of Machane Yehuda. Next tour leaves tomorrow, Tuesday.

Additional walking tours planned for June. Stay tuned for announcements.
