Unfortunately, some people must be hospitalized over yomtov, including seder night. This poses a special challenge regarding kashrut due to the array of laws and customs surrounding the yomtov.

hadassah-ein-kerem-mall-outside1I visited the mall at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in the hope of reporting to you on eateries with legitimate mehadrin hechsherim.

Most disturbing is the fact that there is at least one store claiming “mehadrin” when in fact this is not the case. It has a regular Jerusalem Rabbinate hechsher but the store sign states “mehadrin”, once again showing you that you absolutely must check for a valid kashrut certificate before ordering food, anywhere!. The store sign is no substitute for a kashrut agency certificate. (more…)

Baruch Hashem, the yomim tovim are rapidly approaching, and many readers, perhaps in the United States, Europe or Australia, will be joining us for Sukkot. In addition, many locals will also be dining out over yomtov.

SZMC – Addressing Body and Soul

szmc-seal1Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center does not need JKN for promotion but nevertheless, the medical center has become the first hospital in Israel that will be reported on in this forum. I received a growing number of requests and inquiries from readers regarding hospitals, so the decision was made to check it out, and here it is, a view of the kashrus in SZMC. 
My meeting took place during the afternoon hours, beginning in the fifth floor office of the medical center’s rabbi.
