Erev Pesach Update from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel

paper-towelsSome of the paper products, including paper towels, napkins, disposable plates and cups contain starch which may be obtained from a wheat or kitniot (corn) source. Since these products may come in direct contact with foods (for example following frying, to clean one’s mouth or hot drinks [hot cups]), it is preferable that during Pesach, one uses only products bearing a kosher for Passover label. chief-rabbinate-of-israel1As per the Jerusalem Religious Council, the Jerusalem Rabbinate DOES NOT give kashrut supervision to the Beit Knesset HaGadol (Jerusalem Great Synagogue) hall located at 56 King George Street despite claims made by the shul of being “kosher mehadrin”. Any attempt to present the facility as under private kosher supervision represents misleading the public. Rabbonim may not conduct weddings ceremonies in the hall as a result.  chief-rabbinate-of-israel1Recent tests conducting by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel have confirmed the presence of the “bulb” bug in green and red heads of cabbage. The insect is rather transparent and as such, difficult for untrained eyes to detect its presence.

Therefore, all local rabbinates around the country are instructed to use only the bug-free cabbages, red and green. In cases of dire need, assuming the mashgiach has the time and logistical ability to inspect cabbage leaves, if the religious council rav agrees, he may inspect the regular cabbage, providing that 8-9 [top] leaves are first removed.
