9 Shevat 5772

February 2, 2012

chief-rabbinate-of-israel1Following is a translation of portions of the most recent Chief Rabbinate Kashrus Enforcement Division update, dated 8 Shevat 5772/February 1, 2012.

1. The Ashdod Rabbinate reports kashrus has been restored to the HaBaron Hall located at 1 Tzahal Street. The level of kashrus is listed as rabbinate mehadrin.

2. It has come to the attention of the Rabbinate that bakeries and others use cinnamon sticks. These are at times infested and required examination by removing a portion onto white paper. Tuesday, 7 Shevat 5772

January 31, 2012

4-d2a4e4ff-1670036-800As reported in Chief Rabbinate of Israel Kashrus Enforcement Division update number 008 (2 Shevat 5772/January 26, 2012), there are boxes of American cereals from General Mills that are chodosh. The boxes are sold under the “Nestle” name, with a hashgacha on the box from the USA from the OU, and on the side panel they say “with permission of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel” as well as having kashrus from Osem.

Listed in the alert are Cheerios®, Honey Nut Cheerios®, Nestle Fibre 1®, Multi Cheerios®, Nestle Clusters®, and Yogurt Cheerios®.

One must familiarize oneself with the product codes and then one may determine which cereals are before the cutoff date, hence yoshon, and those after the cutoff date, hence chodosh. (more…)

Basher Cheese in the Shuk

6 Shevat 5772

January 30, 2012

dscn2473-smallThe Chief Rabbinate of Israel Kashrus Enforcement Division (Update 008/ 2 Shevat 5772 – January 26, 2012) writes about the popular Bashar cheese store in Machane Yehuda, “The Shuk” in Jerusalem.

The update reads:

The store has no hashgacha from any kosher certifying agency.

Second of all, after a growing number of complaints have been received by the London Beis Din, apparently prompting the alert, it has been learned that the folks at Basher tell customers that some cheeses are under the hashgacha of the London Beis Din when this simply is not true. Such cheeses include (in the Rabbinate’s alert) wyke farms, somellow, milk cheddar, village oak fhedder. (more…)

January 29, 2012

I do not recall a Chief Rabbinate alert causing a storm on the magnitude as the one mentioning Haagen Dazs® ice cream, but there is always a first.

Chief Rabbinate of Israel Kashrus Enforcement Division alert 007 (13 Teves 5772 – January 8, 2012) mentions the ice cream which is apparently quite a popular item among former North Americans. Item 12 in that alert cites the ice cream has found its way into freezers in branches of ShuferSal, Mega Ba’Ir and “other stores” and the containers read that they have the approval of the Chief Rabbinate.
