Spleen that is Not Properly De-Veined

12 Adar II 5774
March 14, 2012

The following information is translated from Chief Rabbinate of Israel Kashrus Enforcement Unit Bulletin 013/5774.

The Chief Rabbinate of Israel has learned that there is spleen being sold that is not yet ‘de-veined’ in accordance with Halacha. The experts from the Chief Rabbinate were sent to investigate the allegation and the rabbi who heads the Nikur (de-veining) unit of Jerusalem confirmed that the carton of spleen he inspected in a butcher store contained 20 spleens, each “with serious kashrus issues”.

1. Traces of ‘chelev’ (Halachically prohibited fat) remained on the spleen’s surface, including the side on which the chelev is Biblically prohibited as well as on the other side where the prohibition is Rabbinic, due to ‘moris ayin’.
2. A probe of the inner organ revealed the de-veining process was incomplete and portions that must be removed in adherence with Halacha remain. This prohibition is Biblical.
