Rabbi Shmuel Semelman, whose reports regarding kashrus and alcoholic beverages appear on JKN regularly, explains that one must be acquainted with the country of origin regarding alcoholic beverages, since a brand certified or deemed ‘approved’ that is manufactured in Europe, may not enjoy the same status if originating in N. America.
One recent case in point was a report regarding Southern Comfort.
Rabbi Semelman is seeking assistance regarding Smirnoff Vodka, explaining the product from Europe is approved while he is working to learn more about the American counterpart.
As such, anyone who can send photos of the Smirnoff label and bottle from N. America is requested to do so, to Rabbi Shmuel Semelman at semelman@gmail.com
A JKN NOTE: The rule regarding country of manufacture applies to many other foods as well and I urge shoppers to always take the extra millisecond to verify the kashrus of a product taken off a shelf, in any country.
