There is a new spice store in the shuk, on the closed street (right side if one walks from Yaffo to Agrippas) displaying the hechsher of Rabbi Machpud – Badatz Yoreh Deah.  The store owner even showed me a contract attesting to the legitimacy of the store’s sign, displaying the Yoreh Deah symbol.

I spoke with Rabbi Shmuel Abuchatzera of the Badatz Yoreh Deah on Monday afternoon, and he told me “for as long as you do not see our teudah in the store, we are not responsible for the kashrut. The sign and the contract do not represent a kashrut authorization, only a teudah”.

The Jerusalem Religious Council has reinstated the supervision. The previous management that was apprehended with non-kosher meats is no longer affiliated with the store according to the rabbinate’s Rabbi David Malka.
