JKN Kashrus Briefs – Kislev 5769 – December 2008 [003]
23 Kislev 5769 (Motzei Shabbos)
December 20, 2008

Following are some kashrus tidbits – many the result of follow-ups to inquiries from subscribers and some just information one acquires in the course of checking out eateries and becoming involved in the kosher industry.

I have received an number of requests to re-visit the Jerusalem Central Bus Station, which I did today, 23 Kislev/26 December (Tuesday). I did not attempt a comprehensive report, but just scanned the eateries and took photos of some of the kashrus certificates. I remind you once again that the certificates for the most part expire on 30 Kislev/27 December, and as always, but perhaps now more than usual, check the certificate before eating. Just because a place has a specific supervision today does not mean it will not change next week.

Anyway, what I did learn is that the infestation of non-authorized supervisions is indeed evident in the central bus station, and in addition, it appears the new guy on the block, Tiferet Kashrut [Update 002, item 3] seems to be taking the place of the old popular unauthorized kashrut Keter Kashrut.

MAIN ENTRANCE FLOOR
Baba Burekas: Immediately to the right of the up escalator. I also ran over to nearby Center 1 where most of the stores are Jerusalem Rabbinate Mehadrin.

A note however concerning Justpa Bakery, which has a very small easily missed sign that says “items on top shelf are either actual dairy or ‘chezkat chalavi’” which means that are made in dairy ovens/utensils and therefore, many not be served in a meat setting. One should be particularly careful to make certain regarding his Shabbat products, including challot, that they are suitable for a meat table.

Once again, I DO NOT recommend or instruct readers where they may or may not eat. That is the job of a rav, which I am not. I am just working to bring reliable facts to permit you to make an educated decision regarding eating out in Israel.

I have noticed the topic of the complexities of eating out in Eretz Yisrael are making their way to magazines and kashrut periodicals in N. America and I hope readers are beginning to get the message, not everything in Jerusalem or elsewhere in Eretz Yisrael is what you may believe it to be.

Please urge your local Rav to inquire and try to learn to advise your congregation and so forth. I hope that when a new Jerusalem Chief Rabbi(s) is/are appointed, they will take on the battle of ousting unauthorized supervisions and provide a clear concise formula, thereby permitting consumers understand what the kashrut is all about.

For questions, or comments please send me an email at Jerusalemkn@gmail.com . I will do my best to respond.
