The Jerusalem Greater Triangle – Part 1

The Jerusalem Greater Triangle – Part 1

February 20, 2008

Well, I did not get to the Jerusalem Central Bus Station to begin my report on that location yet, but I do have what I will call “Part I” of a report covering the Greater Jerusalem Triangle, King George Street, Jaffa Road and Ben-Yehuda Street. Also included are eateries on Yoel Solomon, Agrippas, Ben-Hillel, and Shamai Streets and whatever else pops into the report.

There are locations that are not listed.  I did not question anyone in eateries, but just walked in, identified myself when necessary, and recorded information from the store’s teudat kashrut (kosher certificate).

The information is accurate as of the afternoon of Wednesday, February 20, 2008, remember and check when entering a restaurant or eatery since the kashrut supervisions seem to change quite frequently these days.

I pondered, albeit not for too long, as how to list the eateries and I opted to do so by street. I hope one day, when job hunting is no longer my primary occupation, to find someone and the means to build a database that will permit visitors to look up a place by street name, kosher certification, business name and so-forth. Perhaps one day in the future.

Anyway, I was surprised, and not for the good, that I found several non-kosher establishments, places in which workers explained they do not have a kosher certificate and in some, actually telling me they are not kosher and/or open Shabbat. There are also a number non-kosher butcher shops, with Russian language writing around town.

I did not enter the backstreets behind Yoel Solomon Street, or off of Jaffa Road, both locations with bars and hidden eateries. I also did not cover kiosks but that is not to say I did not take a look. There are candies, chocolates and other products from around the world that need a kosher supervision, such as chocolates, and chocolates filled with liquors and other delicacies.

Please, please check each item before buying and do not be embarrassed to ask to see a stores teudat kashrut before being seated. Take a moment and read it, making certain it reflects the store’s name, address, states dairy, meat, parve, and is valid – not expired. That is basically what I did today; recording valid kosher certificates and now I am passing it along to you as an up-to-date list.

If you wish more information then you must enter of phone a place and speak with a mashgiach. I may go more in-depth in follow-up reports on the Jerusalem Triangle.
