Well, it’s now 20:45 and we completed another Machane Yehuda shuk walking tour less than an hour ago. Baruch Hashem, the information was well-received and I believe that slowly, the word is getting out. Participants are learning the ins-and-outs of shopping in Yerushalayim and how to become wise kosher consumers.
I apologize, but by the time I remembered the traditional photo it was dark and most participants, numbering about 20, had left. You will have to take my word on this one. The tour lasted well over two hours — an eager group with many questions. I hope participants headed home with a feeling the time was well spent.
Stay tuned to the website, Facebook and email for announcements of the next tour. Sorry, nothing on the planning board for the immediate future.

Once again, I turn to the growing number of readers and subscribers interested in kashrus and the ongoing effort to learn and improve the situation in Eretz Yisrael to assist.
Earlier this week I met with the rav/posek of the Jerusalem Rabbinate, Rabbi Eliyahu Schlesinger Shlita, using our meeting to point out what I believe are many problems with the local rabbinate kashrus.
The rav appeared most attentive and more importantly, genuinely concerned, and promises to work with me directly towards improving the situation in Jerusalem. Read the rest of this entry »

Yeshivat Netiv Meir, located in the Bayit Vegan neighborhood of Yerushalayim, took a major step during the vacation months, kashering the entire kitchen to the standard of Badatz Mehadrin, under the supervision of Rav Avraham Rubin Shlita.
That means beginning this fall, the school’s cafeteria meals and all food produced on location will be under the supervision of the Badatz.
The new operation runs under the name Dash Catering (054-490-6816- Avi Scharf)

I reported on July 6, 2010 that the store, located at the corner of Machane Yehuda and Agrippas Streets, lost its hechsher from Badatz Machzikei Hadas, Belz. It has since lost its other mehadrin hechsher, Badatz Beit Yosef.
I remind you that I reported many times that the hechsherim only covered the nuts, seeds and dried fruits, NOT the candies, but it now appears that he has enlarged the candy section to over half the store and according to the Badatz agencies, “he is selling too many problematic items” compelling the decision to pull the hechsherim. It appear that this year more than in the past, there are growing concerns surrounding fears that El Al did not sell its chametz, presenting more than minor concerns regarding the airline’s duty free.
According to the airline’s rav, Rabbi Yochanan Hiyut, the chametz was indeed sold, to the beis din of Rav Wosner Shlita, and the airline did not sell any forbidden items during Pesach.
Anyone wishing additional information pertaining to El Al and Ben-Gurion International Airport Duty Free, please contact the respective rabbonim directly. The subject seems to be non-ending this year. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Rabbi Shmuel Semelman, whose reports regarding kashrus and alcoholic beverages appear on JKN regularly, explains that one must be acquainted with the country of origin regarding alcoholic beverages, since a brand certified or deemed ‘approved’ that is manufactured in Europe, may not enjoy the same status if originating in N. America.
One recent case in point was a report regarding Southern Comfort.
Rabbi Semelman is seeking assistance regarding Smirnoff Vodka, explaining the product from Europe is approved while he is working to learn more about the American counterpart. Read the rest of this entry »
